Question:

Log cabin built in 1985 in SW Okla.- linseed oil - ugh. Previous owner tried to remove it with little success. We need to get this cabin exterior sealed but are working on a shoestring budget as this is a second home. Advice?

Answer:

You could grind or sand it off yourself to clean wood. Do not go on a shoestring budget to buy the stain. Buy a good quality log home stain like Life Line. Once re-finished, keeping up on the maintenance is the key to not having to re-do it again in a few years.
