i am building my cabin from jack pine cut and sawed this summer and it is in the garage drying now--my question is this - the logs are 4" by 8" and i am thinking of putting a 2x4 between the logs for a 1 and 1/2 inch gap--i will have the 2x4 flush on the inside and painted-can i chink the ouside ga1/2 inch space-and do you think this will work ok-

Not sure what the 2x4 is for, but it should work. You will want to use true latex chinking to cover the gap outside. I would recommend running a 1" piece of masking tape over the 2x4 before chinking if you don't use a backer foam. Grip Strip would work best for you.
