Question:

My wife has a Beauty shop in a log home, it's 30+ years old. The outside has been painted. What is the best way to clean and then repaint? There does not appear to be any chinking on the building, the logs are vertical vs. horizontal. Logs have slots on both mating surfaces with a pc of wood inserted between logs. Should there be chinking?

Answer:

First, you proabably do not need caulk or chink if there are no air, water or bug leaks.

Second, the paint should go! Paint is not good for logs. It should be removed by corn cob blasting and then have a good latex stain applied.

We have a 14 year old Hearthstone Log Cabin which is now in need of repainting. Please tell us the procedure for this. Does the chinking get repainted or rechinked at all and if so which is painted first the chinking or the logs?? We are also changing the color for the logs from dark grey top a tree trunk brown color....any suggestions about that??
Any suggestions, help you could give us would be appreciated.
Thanks,
