Question:

How can you determine if the stain on your logs is either oil based or latex? We moved into a log cabin and we don't know how long ago the logs were treated and what to do first. Thanks!

Answer:

It's hard to say without seeing it. A lot of oil based stains are sticky and turn black.

We need to restain (a different color) our log home that was built 2006. We do not know if the Contractor (no longer in business) used oil-base or water base. We do know that the product was Behr from Home Depot. HD said it was probably water-based, but how can we be sure?
