Question:

We found a pile of wood particles in the corner of our bedroom. We have noticed large black ants on several trips, but there were no visible insects or eggs in the pile. Do you have any idea what is happening? What do you suggest we do? Our cabin is located in Boone NC. The logs are Western Red Cedar.

Randy:

It sounds like you have carpenter ants. They like wet wood so I would look for rotten logs by tapping on the logs with a hammer. You will be able to tell when you hear a different sound from the rest of the house. You might want to call a bug man and have an inspection.
