Question:

My father and I built a log home some twenty years ago near a lake on the border of VA and NC. The logs are in remarkable good condition but we have been noticing tine "pin" holes in the logs lately. Do you know what kind of bug these are from and what I can do to get rid of them? The logs were treated before with a UV resistant polyurethane...I would like to reseal them, preferably without stripping them...do you have a recommendation for that as well?

Answer:

Sounds like Powder Post Beetle. It will have to be stripped and treated with borate.

Hi- we have a log cabin in Vilas cty, WI and think we have carpenter bees. Just spent 10K + to re-stain and seal whole house. What can we do about these bees without restaining whole house? Thanks, J
