I am trying to carve a cypress log (a tree that I had to cut down)into a totem pole of sorts. I am trying to get it to dry evenly to avoid cracking, but the cracks are starting to come anyway. What can I use to fill them in the end? Is there a trick to drying out the log.

The slower the log dries the better. Maybe have it put into a kiln that is real slow.
