Question:

Hey, I have a log home ..the main Support beam in the middle of my home has started to crack...this is a beam that hold the weight from the roof to the main floor...this is making me very nervous...is this a reason to be concern, also is this a large amout of money to have this replaced. any answers would help...I am in this alone. Thank you. Mary

Answer:

This is very common, and normally is not a concern. You may want to have a structural engineer look at. It would be very costly to replace. More than likely the roof would have to be removed to get to it. The engineer could say for sure. He may give you some ideas to beef it up without disturbing the existing beam.
