Question:

We are purchasing a two yr old cabin that has been chinked but has not been stained. The logs have a little bark on them. I like the way the chinking color (sandstone) looks but need to stain to protect the wood. Any suggestions on sanding, staining and keeping the chink looking the same? Your help is appreciated.

Answer:

I would remove the bark for starters. It will be hard to stain and keep the stin off from the chink. It may be quicker to stain the entire home and then paint the chink lies or re-chink.
