Question:

I have a ost and beam house and have recently noticed 1/8 to1/4 inch bored holes in some logs. They r fresh holes as I can see shavings (not dust) produced by whatever is making the holes. I have also noticed a small amount of dust on some logs, not sure if this is from insects or leftover from construction. Any tips?

Answer:

The 1/4" hole size could be carpenter bees, but they do not leave a frass (sawdust). The smaller holes could be Old house Bores. You should have a pest control company look at it. If it is Old House Bores you will want to strip the house and apply a good borate.

30 old full log cabin in NE Minnesota. We saw large black ants and 1/4 inch holes inside and out. Holes have saw dust pile below. Store bought ant treatment traps seemed to work. Still see some new damage. At least one hole was 3 inches. What treatment is recommended? Logs have never been caulked and roof has 4 foot overhang. Thanks,
