Question:


I just bough a 20 25 year old post and beam home and fround some lasge cracks in the exposed roof beams. what do I do to fix it? The beam runs 20 feet and just a section is split..

Answer:

I wouldn't worry about it. It's pretty normal to see that checking in beams and logs. If it is a major worry then you should have a structural engineer look at it.

I too had a beam (horizontal) that had a large ugly crack. The main word is ugly. Since it was an interior beam, I had not water or insect worries. However, I filled it with backer-rod and Perma-Chink's Energy Seal. Then, I stained and sealed the beam. It LOOKS much better.
