Question:

Hubby and I purchased a log home almost 3 years ago that was built in 1982. The logs on the outside are VERY dark, and it is peeling everywhere. I am reading online and seem to find opposing ideas as to the best way to strip the logs. Which is better, corn cob blasting, or using a remover and pressure washing it off? Also, what needs to be done afterwards?

Answer:

corn cob blasting is the best in my opionion. It keeps the logs dry. You should have a borate treatment applied at this point. If the logs are allowing wind, water or bugs to get into the interior it should be caulked or chinked. 3/4" gap or less, caulk, 3/4" or larger gap, chink. Stain ASAP with a good quality log home stain. I prefer Perma Chinks Ultra 2. Call Timeless Wood Care Products for help and to get these products at 800-564-2987.
