Question:

I have a 25 year old log home located in central Maine. It is Maine cedar exterior walls and pine beams. The ceilings are 1" t&g pine. I have been finding piles of what looks like very fine saw dust randomly around the house. There are no obvious holes above the piles. What is likely causing this and what is the best to treat it? Also the house is only used seasonally if that makes any difference.

Answer:

It sounds like Powder Post beetle, but there should be tiny pin holes above the dust piles. If so, the house should be stripped and borate treated.

What do you mean by stripping? As I have the same problem, I was told these beetles bore out of the wood logs every 100 yrs

I forgot to mention, the holes are on the inside and the logs have never been finished as they are milled flat on the inside. I also have major problem with the Blue Jays peeking at my house. Doing alot of damage. Can't shoot them as the are protected in Calif.

We have a log home that was built in 1981. We moved into the home 4 years ago. We have had to replace some of the logs due to rotting and we have stripped and resealed the home once since we have been here. We cannot seam to get rid of the Power Post Beatles. Can we continue applying Borate over the stain? We love our log cabin, but it is very frustrating to watch all the damage to the logs to to beetles and carpenter bees!! Frustrated and wanting to go back to brick or rock!!!
