when installing the first log on afoundation whay can be used to prevent rot down the road

Answer:

Use a treated log or make sure that the foundation is high enough to prevent back splash from hitting that first, or any log. Be sure to apply a good borate treatment before staining to all wood surfaces.

thinking about building a square milled log cabin.
what is your thoughts on cedar vs white pine and how much checking is normal on both and what size logs 8x12 or 6 x8 would be best.
