I recently bought a log cabin that the previous owner used marine spar varnish on the exterior. I keep reading that this should not be done, but no one ever says why not. Why not use spar varnish on exterior as long as it is UV resistant?

It is not made to put up with all of the movement of the logs from summer to winter and will crack allowing water to get in behind, causing it to fail. Good quality log home stains will put up with this movement.
