Question:

Hi - I rent a 3-sided log house in Interior Alaska. I get some major drafts from some cracks in the logs that are between 1/4 and 1/2 inch wide in places - especially at the corners. I've been told that all three sided log places should have cracks chinked because they are so drafty. Reading through your website, it appears you don't recommend filling them because they require a lot of upkeep. My landlord wants to fill with spray foam. I'm not crazy about that idea but it's not my place. De

Answer:

DO NOT use the spray foam. It is an "open celled" foam and attracts moisture to the wood and will cause log rot. You can fill the checks in the corners that are allowing wind, water or bugs to get to the interior. Around windows and doors also. You will have to inspect them a couple of times a year for failure and repair if needed. Filling all checks on the house is not recommended or needed.
