Question:

I have a twenty-old-log home, not sure when it was last treated for insects. Pressure washed then applied wood guard with UV stain treatment 2 wks ago. Now noticing small, flying 'bee-looking' insect going in/out of holes that were already there. Haven't noticed any new holes. These bugs are very small, about 4-6mm long with yellow and black striped abdomen. Are these parasitic insects or did they make the hole? They aren't carpenter bees because they are very tiny. What would you suggest fo

Answer:

Bob:

Sounds like Powder Post Beetles. There is not much you can do at this point. The home needs to be striped down to bare wood and have a borate treatment applied. This can only be done on bare wood. You should never power wash your log home. It drives the water so deep into the wood fiber that it will not dry out properly. If you do you should wait at least 2 months for it to dry out as much as possible.

Bob, I seem to have the same insect issue. I live in Maryland, where do you live? I have treated mine with Borate and Woodgaurd and still seem to have the problem. I have never seen the powder post beetles, however I do see new holes and the same parasitic bees/insects you described.

We have a brand new log house that we haven't moved into yet. I am really concerned about two things. 1) Mushrooms or fungus on the purlins (outside)
2) Insect holes and fine sawdust piles
The house has been sanded and caulked and stained with "Cascade" inside and out. Help! Am I worrying needlessly?
