Question:

There is a small pile of sawdust underneath a ceiling beam in my living room. Any idea what is doing it? How should I proceed? It's a 200 year old wooden house with cedar shingles and wooden beams throughout. Most of the beams are original although there are a few new ones we added.

Answer:

If there is no stain or finish on the wood you can brush a borate treatment on them to stop these bugs. Sounds like Powder Post Beetle, but could be any one of many other pests.

I have a 10 year old cabin with sawdust on the wood both inside and out. It was unlived in for 2 years. Could I try a borate treatment first? If so, where can i purchase this product?
