We have an 80 year old log cabin in montana on forest service land. It was chinked with what looks like particle board, about 2" thick. The "chink" is crumbling and in need of replacement. Being true to the history and originality of the place, what would you recommend? The forest service is a bit particular with the older cabins. Is the best any different? Any color more authentic?

Last, the logs have not ever been refinished. After removing all rotting logs, how would you rehab t


Since the logs have never been finished, I would recommend applying a good borate treatment like Shell Guard and leave it at that. The "chinking" that you have is not what I would call "authentic". Check with the park service, but I would recommend using Perma Chink Medium Gray that looks like the old mortar that was used for years as chinking.
