Question:

I am building a square beam cabin. I am milling logs into 8by8 beams. My question is is it better to plane a champfer on the corner of each log? Or would you suggest milling 1/2 to 3/4 in. boards between the beams to leave chinking space.
Also, do you recomend the modern strechy chinks or a more! traditional mortar sand mix? Thanks for any help you can give

Answer:

I would say go with the chamfer and run Energy Seal caulk in each chink line inside and out. Also at butt joints where two log ends meet in the middle of the wall.
