We built a log home out of spruce logs. This is are first winter in are new home, and have noticed checking about a 1" or more on vertical bearing logs that are in the loft holding are purlins up. Do we have anything to worry about and can we fill these checks with something?

This is very normal. If they are really of concern you should have a structural engineer look at it. You could fill them with Energy Seal with a Grip Strip backer if you like. You should wait till spring when most of the moving is done.
