Question:

Just bought 1.4 acres in mid-Wisconsin. Want to build 3K to 4K sq ft ranch style log home. Like Heartbuilt and Hiawatha 12" swedish cope log homes but not sure about which wood to use. Choices are Norway Pine, White Pine or Engelmann Spruce. Just based on wood which would you recommend? Heartbuilt does not seem to chink. Is it always required or recommended?

Answer:

Either the Norway (Red) Pine or the Spruce. DO NOT use White Pine. Most log home builders say that their homes do not need to be caulked or chinked, but over time almost all will need it. It is really best to do it right up front and avoid any chance of water getting in and causing stains or rot.
