40 years ago I restored a 1850 all cedar log cabin and used oil soaked oakum for chinking. Over the years it has loosened and pests (squirrels, chipmunks…) have pulled out oakum where the gaps were large. I’ve been thinking of redoing the cabin with one of the modern synthetic caulks but my concern is that the oil based oakum will compromise the caulk. Any suggestions?
