I am using Grip Strip backer rod between my logs and didn’t want to purchase the expensive synthetic chinking on the market today. Could I apply mortar and make it stick to the backer rod? If so, what recipe of mortar chinking do you recommend? Thanks

The mortar probably will not stick to it. The problem with mortar is that when it dries it pulls away from the log and leaves a small crack for water to get in behind. Google for recipes.
