I have dreamed of a log home for 20 years. I just purchased some property and ready to build. After reading these posts I am now reconsidering! If I used cedar would that prevent some of these issues? And also what do you think of dove tail construction and v grooved square logs they will have no chinking! Thanks

Cedar can be better for rot problems, but it also can sometimes cause issues with stain because of all of the tannins in the wood. The square logs are okay, but they can be tough to maintain with stain since most of them have a rough surface. The log home manufactures sell their homes as chinkless/caulkless, but eventually they will need to be at least caulked.
