New small northern cedar cabin. Very rustic with half to 3 inch gaps between logs. Don’t want to use mortar but synthetic chinking is too expensive for this lightly used cabin. Is oakum a cheaper alternative (with strips of split wood in larger gaps)? I plan on using linseed oil on the outside. Should I cut it with turpentine? Would straight linseed oil be sufficient for ends of logs? Thanks so much.

You could use the oakum and wood strips, but plan on sharing your cabin with bugs and mice. DO NOT use linseed oil unless you want a black cabin. The linseed oil is food for black mold to grow on the logs. Use some sort of latex stain, Sherwin Williams Woodscapes, Perma Chink Life Line…
