what product do i use to fill cracks in a stained log cabin that will blend in well when using cwf with uv protection, and is ok to use bleach to kill mildew applied by pump sprayer? please give me some tips. thanks, jim
First, never use bleach unless it is diluted by about 100 to one. Bleach will not allow the stain to adhere to the wood fiber unless it is COMPLETELY rinsed off. Put some on your hand and try to rinse it off and you will see what I mean.
Second, I do not recommend filling the checks (cracks). When you fill them, the log s are always expanding and contracting it will eventually get a hair line crack along the filler and the wood. This allows water to seep in behind and cannot dry out because you have filled the opening. Leave them alone unless you have one that is running into a window or door jamb, or corner, and allowing wind, water or bugs to get inside. I have seen whole walls rotted from filling checks and not being inspected for failure.
