I purchased a 100 year old log cabin about 4 years ago. The previous owner was using oakum (sp?) instead of mortar or other chinking. Also, the logs were previously treated with creosote. There are many gaps where cold air, insects, and the occasional bat can enter. Can you tell me the best way to proceed for exterior maintenance. I think I need to pull out the old oakum, sand the logs as best I can, stain them with an appropriate preservative, then chink the logs. Does this sound right?
