I am remodeling a civil war era log cabin with modern additon. I am trying to decide whether to replace the siding over the entire house to make it all match or to try to tackle the task of rechinking the original logs. I do not know what shape these logs are in until I tear into it. If there is considerable damage would it be in my best interest to redo the siding or should I go ahead and rechink and blast the logs?
I have seen some homes with the latex chinking that is separated and this make

Since this is a civil war era cabin I would think it would be in your interest to preserve it as much as possible. It is possible to match the addition with the existing. The chinking separation you are talking of is caused by improper installation and/or wet logs were used and dried out shrinking a little pulling away from the chink.
