We are in the process of building a red cedar log home with real, round, logs and no chinking. We know that we have to wait until summer to stain the outside as our temperatures here in Alberta are dropping! We want as dark a stain as possible and were wondering what your recommendations would be? Thank you and what an awesome and informative website!

I would recommend the Perma Chink Life Line stain. The Ultra 2 Walnut, Chestnut or Sequoia are all real nice dark colors that will hold up well. It will require a wash and re-clear coat about every 3 years. Any good log home stain will require maintenance every 3 to 4 years. Avoid any of the stains that have plant oil in them, Linseed Oil, etc.
