I am considering building a log house in East Tennessee. What species of tree (logs) would you recommend to use, and why?

I would say any species except for maybe White Pine if you are using large logs (12” + dia). They tend to be hollow sometimes. Any wood that you use will require some maintenance every 3 years. I tell my customers to budget $1.50 per sq ft of living area per year to keep it professionally maintained. So you will need to budget $3,000 per year or about $8K to $9K on the 3rd year. Of course you can do it for a lot less by doing it yourself, but most people let it go way to long and then are in for a big bill to fix.
