Wow first things first this is a great site, Thank You. This is a two part question. First I am a first time log home owner and am trying to learn my way around. Is there a book or web-site or even a class that you would recommend? I believe I have found the answer but I want to double check. There are a lot of different opinions out there about cracks and checks. They seem to be used universally. I have a crack on the top side of the log it is not very bad yet, and I am trying to keep it that w
I recommend that you do not fill the checks. The caulk that you use will almost always seperate from the wood leaving a hairline crack that allows water to get in behind it. Now that the check is filled it cannot dry out – ROT! I have seen whole walls rotted out from filling the checks and not inspecting them 2-3 times per year for failure.
