Not yet installed, I have brand new Northern White Cedar D-Logs.
1. What prep is needed (any sanding, etc)?
2. Is borate needed (being that Cedar is naturally insect repellant)?
3. How is borate applied?
4. On house interior, if the cedar is left bare (for natural scent) are there any negative consequences?
1. Light sanding will help the stain adhere to the wood fiber. The mill glaze must be removed.
2. I would apply borate since it helps stop log rot also. Cedar does not rot quickly, but it can rot.
3. It can be applied with a pump up garden sprayer for quick use per label instructions.
4.The only draw back is that without a finish, dirt and dust will get into the wood fiber over timeand turn the logs darker than normal. You will get some darkening either way due to UV break down thru the windows. UV blocking glass will help stop this. If you do decide to put a finish on the interior, putextra UV inhibitor in the finish before applying.
