What is this best way to remove mildew and blackening. I have used bleach in this past, but now the wood seems immune to the bleach. I am using a hard rubber sanding wheel but this will take forever. Also, once done, what is the very best stain for mold?mildew control….I don’t want to do this again. Thanks much.
The best way to remove all of the old finish and mold is to corn cob blast. Bleach is not good for the wood if used in large quantities. It is also hard to rinse off so that the stain will adhere to the wood fiber. You may be staining too soon after washing and sealing in the moisture which will cause mold and mildew. If you are power washing it is definitely the problem. As for the stain to use, it has a lot to do with keeping up on the maintenance. Also if you have alot of trees or shrubs next to the house not allowing it to dry out quickly in the morning can cause this problem. We like to use Life Line made by Perma Chink.
