Some of the logs in my bathroom have a black discoloration, how do I know if I have a mildew problem? How do I remove it if it is?

Sounds like you do have a mildew problem. You should increase ventilation with an exhaust fan. As for getting the black out of the logs you will probably have to sand them back to clean wood, if possible, and re-finish.
