I have an 1800’s log house in Indiana that we are in the process of restoring, the chinking is mostly creek rock and mud with horse hair with an avg gap of 8 inches between logs. I need to rechink it. Do I need to remove the chinking that is there or can I rechink over the exsiting chinking after I remove any loose material, and what is the best chinking to use?
Chinking over it should be fine after removing any loose material. You should fill in any area’s that are removed with closed cell foam such as Grip Strip. You should also put a layer of masking tape under it leaving about 1” of exposed top and bottom edges. I like to use Perma Chink.
