I bought a 31 year old log home that has been badly neglected for a log time, has a lot of gaps and cracks, and the exterior of it has been painted over in a horrific grunge grey color. We are trying to repair everything, as the property overall has a lot of potential to be nice, but have no experience with log homes. We also are thinking or repainting it as we hate the color and don’t know how to get rid of the old paint- plus the wood is in bad shape. How do we fill the painted over cracks
First, do not fill the checks (cracks). You will never keep them properly sealed and they will cause rot over time. The only checks that should be filled are the ones the run into a window or door jamb and are allowing wind, water or bug to get inside. You MUST inspect them a couple of times a year for failure or they too will cause problems. The paint really needs to be removed to allow the logs to breathe or it to can cause rot.
