My log home was built in1977, the inside of the walls are varnished. I was told if the inside was finished not to do anything to the outside. Now my home owners insurance is telling me I have to seal the outside. The outside has no finish at all on it.

You absolutely should have something on the exterior. Just do not use paint. Put the money into a good quality log home stain like LifeLine.
It will need to be media blasted to get back to a clean surface and then Osborne brushed to make a desirable surface to apply stain to. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 if you need help or more questions answered.
