We are going to install pine plank siding to our home. 1” x 10” with 1 1/2” space betwen planks. Is it necessary to score the back side of the planks? Also, we like the mortar chinking. Is the chinking installed before the pine planks are installed? What is the best recipe?

Not sure what to tell you about the scoring, but do not use mortar for chinking. It will not seal the planks and will allow water to seep in and cause rot. Use a latex chinking like Perma Chink. They have a couple of colors that look like mortar. Light Gray or Med Gray. It is more expensive, but will save you money in the long run.
