We have a 21 year old log cabin. It is sealed well, there are no drafts or leaks that we can find. The calking on the outside looks a little weathered and dry on the south side. There are no gaps or major cracks in it. Should we redo the calking? How long should it last? Is there a way to tell what kind of calking was used?
Thanks
Any good caulking will last a very long time, but it does need attention from time to time to make sure it has not cracked or seperated from the wood. Look at the caulk and if you have to repair more than 1/3 of the lines I would recommend caulking completely over the old and resealing the wall. The south and west walls are the first to go since they get the most sun and wind. Energy seal made by Perma Chink is a good choice. You can get it from Timeless Wood Care Products at 800-564-2987.
