I have a log home that will need to be stained soon. I believe an oil based stain was used before. I was planning on using Sherwin Williams woodscapes acrylic stain based on what I read here. When I emailed Sherwin Williams about applying the stain over my old stain they said it couldn’t be used on a log home. Is there another solid stain I could use? Do I need to remove the old stain? Thanks so much.

I don’t know why they would have told you that. We have been using it for years and never had a problem. Stripping the old stain first would be best but it may not need to be. It’s hard to say without seeing it. Latex over oil, but never oil over latex (acrylic). Always best to start with a fresh surface.
