We have a log home that is about ten years old. We live in the mountains of Colorado at about 8,000 feet and our home is in the direct sunlight. We have been using Superdeck stain, applied every three years or so. Unfortunately, the stain does not seem to hold up on the sides of the house with a lot of sun exposure. These logs are showing considerable checking and cracking. So here are my questions…1. Is checking and cracking a natural result of having a log home in the Colorado sunshi
Yes, the checking can be promoted from the sun, but with proper protection from stain and clear coat it can be pretty much eliminated if maintained. I am not a big fan of the Superdeck also, since it is oil based. Very thin and from my experience it seems to dissipate very quickly. You best option, and it’s not an inexpensive one, would be to strip and stain with a good quality log home stain. You may have to grind or sand to tighten that wood grain back up to help protect it.
