We recently purchased a 104 year old log cabin and we are wondering what to do to maintain the outside of the logs as they appear to be dryer and much more weathered than the interior walls. I am assuming it has been treated with a black stain, but I was hoping to change it to a weathered grey or smokey transparent stain. What is involved in this process of removing old stain and applying new stain? It there anything we can do to ensure longevity especially on the south facing wall? Thanks
Erin,
It sounds like there may be creosote on this cabin. If you want the gray look you could corn cob blast the exterior to remove as much of the black as you can and then apply a good coat of Shell Guard borate. Do not stain it, but just let it turn gray naturally. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for help with the blasting.
