I am in the process of purchasing a log home built in 1975. It appears to be well maintained. We are getting ready for the home inspection. My concern is the exterior is stained dark and it appears blotchy in certain areas. How do I tell if this is mold or stain discoloration?

It sounds like someone tried to use a liquid stripper on it and then applied fresh stain. This blotchy lookis what you typically get from liquid strippers. Be sure to take a hammer and walk around the house tapping on the logs. You will get to know the sound of good logs. When you hit a bad one, it will sound hollow or mushy. Corners, bottoms of windows and doors, along decks where water splashes are of major concern for rot.
