We are looking at a 12 year old heart cypress log home to buy in central , florida. Is cypress a good log, what do we look for, how should we maitain it, some large shade trees in back, the rest in the sun, should trees be left?
Cypress is a very good wood that typically has little rot. You need to inspect for rotten logs by tapping on them with a hammer looking for soft, dull sounding logs. As for the trees, they shouldn’t be a problem unless they are real close or touching the house. You need to maintain air movement around a log home so that it can dry out from morning dew and rain water. If there is a sprinkler system have it turned on and watch for areas that the sprinkler heads are spraying against the logs. Good chance there will be rot in these areas
