I have a early 1800’s pine log cabin that I am restoring. Most of the Logs are in really good shape with small cracks. What should I do to treat my logs?
Thanks
You should go around the home with a hammer and tap on the logs and inspect for rot. Lower logs close to dirt or a deck surface are most susceptible. You will notice the difference in sound when you come to rot. You should also treat it with a borate treatment, but you will have to have bare wood or at least old unstained wood (grayed). In regards to the small cracks (checks), I do not recommend filling them. This is the logs way to breath and stay dry. If you fill them with caulk it will eventually dry out and separate from the woodallowing water to seep down in behind and not able to dry out causing wood rot to start.
