Hi. Recently purchased an 1827 log cabin. Generally in great shape. I have removed some rot and rechinked a few areas so I am back to the original wood in some places. Most of the logs are a light grey. The previous owners stated they did not stain it. It is not peeling. Hard to believe but the cabin is almost 200 years old and I don’t believe it has ever been stained.
I have tried strippers in a test area with no luck. What is the risk in continuing to let it go natural?
Older log homes, like your 1827 log cabin, often were never stained. To maintain its integrity, simply rinse off the logs and apply a high-quality borate solution such as Shell Guard to protect against pests and decay. Allowing the logs to go natural poses minimal risk as long as you regularly treat them with a borate solution to ensure long-term preservation and protection of the wood.
