We have a home that dates back to the 1800’s and the living room is a log structure. We have removed all coverings and have the logs exposed. We found hand hewn logs that are a foot in diameter and larger the gaps are about 6” and the logs were installed with the bark still on them and of course most of the bark is off but in some areas it is still there. We need to know the best way to clean them to be able to have them visible in the room. They have never had any chinking in them. Please
Normally I would say sand them, but since they are hand hewn the best way to clean them will be to corn cob blast them. Sanding will remove the hewn marks. Unfortunately this will be very messy inside the house. You will want to cover all of your furniture in all other rooms and remove the furniture in the living room. Hang plastic in all door openings leading out of the living room and close any doors possible. You will then want to seal the logs with Life Line Interior Stain and Acrylic Clear Coat.
