I have a 100+ year old log cabin in Northern WI. It is time to apply new protection to the logs and I am not sure which direction to go. The logs are dark brown and in good shape for their age. I plan to hand sand the logs, not media blast, and keep the mortar chinking. I like the way the cabin looks, but want to maintain the health of the logs. If you are looking for the old cabin look I would recommend using Sherwin Williams Woodscapes solid stain. It is not like the modern semi-transparent finishes, but rather looks like paint, but allows the logs to breathe for health. We normally use the color Spicewood or Pine Cone. You could spray on and then paint the chink lines or cut it all in on the logs.
