I just purchased a log home in New Hampshire that is about 11 years old. There aer some signs of weathering-with dirt & fading. I want to first clean the outside-what do I use? I want the wood to be a natural so I don’t want any colored stains-any ideas?? There doesn’t appear to be any rot beginning but I also need to treat with something fo rthe bugs right?! I’m a first time log home owner so any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Kathleen
Kathleen:
It depends on how bad the existing stain is in. You may need to corncob blast the old finish off. You should also apply a borate treatment if you get it down to bare woos. I do not recommend that you use a clear coat. It will break down very fast and not protect the logs from the UV. The darker the stain you can live with the longer and better it will lastand protect your logs.
